Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1 loaf thick-cut brioche or challah bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and caramelize sugar: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth. Pour into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange bread: Slice bread into thick slices and arrange over the caramel layer, slightly overlapping.
  3. Make custard: In a large bowl, whisk eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  4. Soak bread: Pour custard evenly over the bread, pressing down lightly to soak.
  5. Refrigerate overnight: Cover and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours).
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes until golden and set.
  7. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving, spooning caramel sauce from the bottom over each portion.

Notes

  • Refrigerate the assembled dish overnight to allow the bread to soak fully, creating a creamy texture.
  • Use thick-cut brioche or challah for best results and a rich flavor.
