This classic Italian basil pesto is a fresh, flavorful condiment made with fresh basil leaves, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil. Perfect as a sauce, dip, or topping for pasta, pizza, and your favorite proteins.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves
  • the zest of one lemon
  • 1 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup pine nuts
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients in a food processor, small chopper or smoothie maker. Blend/process until you reach your desired consistency. I like my pesto chunkier.
  2. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  3. Transfer the pesto in a clean jar with lid, or other food safe container. This recipe will fill one 8 oz jar.
  4. Serve the pesto with pasta, pizza, as a sauce, topping or on your favorite protein. Read the blog post for other ways to use pesto.
  5. Store the pesto in the refrigerator for up to a week. Read the blog post for serving and freezing recommendations.
