  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into 4 patties.
  2. Cook the patties: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the onion gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Sauté for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and thyme. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Thicken the gravy: Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1-2 minutes until thickened.
  5. Simmer together: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over the top, and let them simmer for 5 minutes. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice.
