Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Mochi Dough

  • 1 cup glutinous rice flour (sweet rice flour)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon matcha powder or cocoa powder (optional, for flavor/color)
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch or potato starch (for dusting)

For the Filling

  • 2 ripe bananas (cut in half or kept whole for larger mochi)

For Decoration (Optional)

  • Melted chocolate (for drizzling)
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Crushed nuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mochi Dough

    • In a microwave-safe bowl, mix glutinous rice flour, sugar, water, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    • Cover with plastic wrap and microwave for 1 minute on high.
    • Stir, then microwave for another 30 seconds. Repeat until the dough is thick and translucent (about 2–3 minutes total).
  2. Cool & Dust

    • Transfer the hot dough onto a starch-dusted surface.
    • Let cool slightly until it’s warm but manageable.
  3. Wrap the Banana

    • Lightly flatten the mochi dough with your hands or a rolling pin.
    • Place a banana half (or whole banana) in the center and gently wrap the mochi around it, sealing the edges.
  4. Shape & Serve

    • Roll lightly to smooth out any seams.
    • Optionally, drizzle with melted chocolate, sprinkle with sesame seeds, or add crushed nuts for extra flavor.
    • Slice and serve immediately or refrigerate for a chilled, chewy treat.
