Sushi Balls offer all the flavors of traditional sushi in an easy-to-make, bite-sized form without the need for rolling mats. Made with seasoned sushi rice, smoked salmon, cucumber, and cream cheese, these flavorful balls are perfect as a snack or appetizer and are beautifully topped with sesame seeds for a delightful presentation.

Ingredients

Scale

Sushi Rice

  • 2 Cups Sushi Rice, cooked and seasoned (using rice vinegar, salt, and sugar)

Fillings

  • 100 grams Smoked Salmon, chopped (about ½ cup)
  • ½ cup Cucumber, deseeded and finely diced
  • 100 grams Cream Cheese, cubed into 1cm pieces

Toppings

  • Sesame Seeds, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sushi rice: Cook and season your sushi rice using your favorite stove-top or Instant Pot sushi rice recipe. Allow it to cool completely before use.
  2. Prepare the fillings: Cube the cream cheese into 1cm pieces. Deseed the cucumber by slicing it in half and scraping out the seeds, then finely dice it. Dice the smoked salmon into small pieces.
  3. Combine the ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, gently mix the cooled sushi rice with the diced cucumber and smoked salmon until the fillings are evenly distributed.
  4. Form the sushi balls: With damp hands, take a spoonful of the rice mixture, place a cube of cream cheese in the center, then top with another spoonful of rice. Shape gently into a compact ball with your hands.
  5. Add the finishing touch: Sprinkle sesame seeds over the sushi balls evenly for added texture and flavor.
  6. Chill and serve: Place the sushi balls in the refrigerator to chill until ready to serve. Enjoy them as a snack or appetizer, optionally served with pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi.

Notes

  • Fineness of fillings is crucial; finely diced ingredients make sushi balls easier to form.
  • Keep your hands and utensils damp to prevent the sticky sushi rice from adhering during preparation.
  • Serve with traditional accompaniments like pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi for authentic flavor.
  • If you don’t have sushi rice, short grain rice can be a suitable substitute.
  • Feel free to experiment with other fillings such as avocado, diced capsicum, or grated carrot for variety.
  • Sesame seeds are optional but add a lovely taste and visual appeal; alternatively, sprinkle furikake seasoning for extra flavor.
