Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Royal icing (white + gel food colors)
  • Edible flowers or flower icing toppers
  • Sprinkles or sanding sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract; beat until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually mix dry ingredients into the butter mixture until dough forms.
  6. Roll dough out to ¼ inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  7. Cut out using round or floral cookie cutters.
  8. Transfer cookies to the prepared baking sheets and bake for 8–10 minutes or until the edges are just lightly golden.
  9. Let cool completely on wire racks before decorating.
  10. Pipe royal icing in floral patterns or outlines.
  11. Add hand-painted flower details with edible gel colors, or press edible flowers into the icing while it’s wet.
  12. Allow icing to set at room temperature for several hours or overnight before serving or packaging.

Notes

  • Do not overbake—cookies should remain soft and lightly golden.
  • Chill dough for easier rolling and cleaner cookie cutter edges.
  • Use a scribe tool or toothpick to help shape icing details.
