Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
  • 8 slices of ham
  • 1 ½ cups of shredded Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer Bread: Cut the bread slices into cubes. Place half of the bread cubes evenly at the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the first layer.
  3. Add Ham and Cheese: Arrange the ham slices over the bread cubes, then sprinkle half of the shredded Swiss cheese evenly on top.
  4. Mix Egg Mixture: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, mustard, salt, and pepper until fully combined.
  5. Pour Egg Mixture: Pour half of the egg mixture over the layered bread, ham, and cheese in the baking dish, ensuring it soaks through evenly.
  6. Repeat Layers: Add the remaining bread cubes, ham slices, and shredded Swiss cheese as you did before to create the second layer.
  7. Top with Remaining Egg Mixture: Pour the rest of the egg mixture over the top layer, allowing it to saturate the ingredients evenly.
  8. Bake Covered: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes to cook through without drying out.
  9. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the casserole is fully set and the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Notes

  • For best results, use day-old bread to avoid sogginess.
  • Swiss cheese can be substituted with Gruyère or cheddar for a different flavor profile.
  • Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of maple syrup to taste.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated thoroughly before serving.
  • This casserole can be prepared the night before; refrigerate after assembly and bake in the morning, adding extra baking time if baking from cold.
