Mini Football Meatball Subs are deliciously hearty sandwiches featuring tender meatballs simmered in marinara sauce, nestled in soft mini sub rolls, and topped with melted mozzarella cheese arranged in football lace patterns. Perfect for game day parties or casual gatherings, these adorable subs combine fun presentation with comforting flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatballs and Sauce

  • 24 frozen mini meatballs
  • 2 cups marinara sauce

Subs

  • 12 mini sub rolls
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 mozzarella string cheese sticks (for laces)

Instructions

  1. Heat Meatballs: Add the frozen mini meatballs and marinara sauce to a small saucepan or mini slow cooker. Simmer them gently over medium-low heat for 15–20 minutes until the meatballs are heated through and the sauce is warm and slightly thickened.
  2. Prepare Rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Carefully slice each mini sub roll lengthwise, leaving one side attached to hold the filling inside. Arrange the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ready for assembly.
  3. Assemble Subs: Spoon two heated meatballs along with some marinara sauce into each sliced mini sub roll. Generously sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of each filled roll.
  4. Bake Subs: Place the assembled subs in the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese has melted completely and begins to bubble slightly.
  5. Add Cheese Laces: While the subs bake, cut thin strips from the mozzarella string cheese sticks. Once the subs are out of the oven, arrange these strips on top of the melted cheese to resemble football laces, adding a festive finishing touch before serving.

Notes

  • You can prepare the meatballs and sauce ahead of time and keep warm in a slow cooker to save time.
  • If you don’t have mini sub rolls, small hoagie or slider buns can be substituted.
  • Use low-moisture mozzarella for best melting results.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle with Italian seasoning or fresh chopped basil before baking.
  • These subs are best served warm immediately after baking.
