Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1 tsp lemon zest (optional)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and water.
  2. Stir frequently and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes, mashing berries slightly as they soften.
  4. If a thicker sauce is desired, dissolve cornstarch in 1 tbsp water and stir into the sauce. Simmer for an additional 2–3 minutes until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat. For a smooth sauce, strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove seeds.
  6. Cool slightly before serving or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Notes

  • Frozen blackberries may release more liquid—reduce water slightly if using.
  • Adjust sugar to taste depending on berry sweetness.
  • Great as a filling for cakes or a drizzle over panna cotta or French toast.
