Ingredients
UnitsScale
2cups fresh or frozen blackberries
1/2cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
1 tsp lemon zest (optional)
1/4cup water
1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Instructions
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and water.
Stir frequently and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes, mashing berries slightly as they soften.
If a thicker sauce is desired, dissolve cornstarch in 1 tbsp water and stir into the sauce. Simmer for an additional 2–3 minutes until thickened.
Remove from heat. For a smooth sauce, strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove seeds.
Cool slightly before serving or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Notes
Frozen blackberries may release more liquid—reduce water slightly if using.
Adjust sugar to taste depending on berry sweetness.
Great as a filling for cakes or a drizzle over panna cotta or French toast.
