This Classic Chicken Cordon Bleu is a crispy, golden, oven-baked favorite stuffed with melty Swiss cheese and savory ham. Topped with a creamy Dijon sauce, it’s an elegant, restaurant-style dish perfect for family dinners or holiday celebrations.

Ingredients

For the chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • 4 slices deli-style ham

  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

For the sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish or line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

  2. Place chicken breasts between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound to about 1/4-inch thickness.

  3. Lay a slice of ham and cheese on each chicken breast. Roll tightly and secure with toothpicks.

  4. Season rolls with salt and pepper. Dredge each roll in flour, dip in egg, then coat with panko breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter.

  5. Place in the prepared baking dish and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown and internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

  6. While chicken bakes, prepare the sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.

  7. Slowly add milk, whisking constantly until smooth. Stir in Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and Parmesan (if using). Cook until thickened, about 3–4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

  8. Remove chicken from oven, discard toothpicks, and drizzle with warm Dijon cream sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded Parmesan for a richer, smoother sauce.

  • To prep ahead, roll and chill chicken up to a day in advance before breading and baking.

  • Great served with green beans, mashed potatoes, or a crisp side salad.
