A luxurious dessert featuring layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and sweet, tangy cherries, all adorned with chocolate shavings. This classic Black Forest Cherry Cake is the perfect treat for special occasions.

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 jar (14 oz) maraschino cherries, drained (reserve juice)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the boiling water to the batter, mixing until combined. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Once the cakes have cooled, cut each cake in half horizontally, creating four layers.
  8. Whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  9. To assemble the cake, place the first layer of cake on a serving plate. Brush with some of the reserved cherry juice, then spread a layer of whipped cream over the cake.
  10. Add a few maraschino cherries and repeat the process with the remaining layers of cake, whipped cream, and cherries.
  11. For the final layer, cover the entire cake with whipped cream, and decorate the top with chocolate shavings and maraschino cherries.
  12. Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

  • The cake can be refrigerated overnight for the flavors to develop further.
  • For a stronger cherry flavor, use fresh cherries and soak them in a bit of the cherry juice.
