Learn how to make the best Irish coffee, a classic warm cocktail combining hot freshly brewed coffee, smooth Irish whiskey, maple syrup for sweetness, and topped with luscious whipped cream. This simple and comforting drink is perfect for cozy evenings or entertaining guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Alcohol

  • 1 ½ ounces Irish whiskey (about 3 tablespoons; Jameson recommended)

Sweetener

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons maple syrup, to taste

Base

  • 6 ounces hot freshly brewed coffee (¾ cup; use your favorite roast)

Topping

  • Whipped cream, for topping (regular or coconut whipped cream for a dairy-free option)

Instructions

  1. Prepare whiskey and syrup: Pour the Irish whiskey and 1 teaspoon of maple syrup into a heat-safe mug. Add a splash of hot coffee and stir well until the maple syrup completely dissolves into the mixture.
  2. Add remaining coffee: Pour in the rest of the hot freshly brewed coffee. Taste the drink and stir in additional maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter cocktail.
  3. Top with whipped cream: Add a generous layer of whipped cream on top. If using softly whipped cream, pour it gently over a spoon to help it float on the coffee surface. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • To make the cocktail dairy-free or vegan, substitute regular whipped cream with coconut whipped cream, which adds a subtle coconut flavor. Refer to Cookie and Kate’s cookbook, Love Real Food (page 220) for a coconut whipped cream recipe.
