These delectable Baked Apple Fritters are a healthier alternative to the traditional deep-fried version. Loaded with juicy diced apples and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, these fritters are baked to golden perfection and finished with a sweet vanilla glaze. Ideal for breakfast, dessert, or as a cozy snack any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fritters:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk (adjust for desired consistency)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until well combined.
  3. Combine the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, and melted unsalted butter together until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
  4. Make the Batter: Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined to avoid overmixing. Fold in the diced apples carefully to distribute them evenly throughout the batter.
  5. Shape and Bake: Using a spoon, drop heaping spoonfuls of batter onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing each about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Bake in the preheated oven for 14 to 16 minutes or until the fritters are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Make the Glaze: While the fritters cool slightly on a wire rack, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until the glaze is smooth and pourable. Adjust milk quantity to reach your preferred consistency.
  7. Glaze and Serve: Drizzle or brush the vanilla glaze generously over the warm fritters and let it set for a few minutes before serving for the best flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Store leftover fritters in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Reheat briefly in the microwave for a fresh-baked taste.
  • For added texture and a nutty flavor, consider folding in chopped walnuts or pecans into the batter.
  • Adjust the glaze thickness by adding more milk for a thinner glaze or more powdered sugar for a thicker glaze, depending on your preference.
