Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 apple, thinly sliced into rounds
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, poppy seeds, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add warm milk, softened butter, and egg. Knead until a soft dough forms (8–10 minutes by hand or with a stand mixer).
  3. Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the filling by beating cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Soak apple slices in lemon juice for 5 minutes to prevent browning, then pat dry.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and shape into rounds. Flatten each slightly.
  7. Press a thumbprint into the center of each bun and fill with the cream cheese mixture.
  8. Place one apple slice on top of each bun and press gently.
  9. Arrange buns on a parchment-lined baking tray and let rest for 15 minutes.
  10. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden. Let cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the milk is warm (not hot) to activate the yeast properly.
  • Use a melon baller or back of a spoon to make the center indent.
  • Best enjoyed slightly warm on the day they’re baked.
