Ingredients

Scale

Walnut Filling

  • 2 cups ground walnuts, toasted
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Phyllo Dough Layers

  • 12 sheets frozen phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

Syrup Topping

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the roll-ups.
  2. Prepare Walnut Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the toasted ground walnuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. This will be the flavorful filling.
  3. Layer Phyllo Dough: Place one sheet of thawed phyllo dough onto a piece of waxed paper and brush thoroughly with melted butter. Stack a second sheet on top and brush with more melted butter to create flaky layers.
  4. Assemble Roll-Ups: Sprinkle 1/4 cup of the walnut mixture evenly over the layered phyllo dough. Then roll up the dough jelly-roll style to encase the filling tightly.
  5. Slice Rolls: Slice the rolled phyllo into 4 smaller rolls and place them in a greased baking dish. Repeat the layering, filling, rolling, and slicing process with the remaining phyllo sheets and walnut mixture.
  6. Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 14 to 16 minutes or until they turn light brown and crispy.
  7. Cool Rolls: Remove the baking dish from the oven and transfer the rolls to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  8. Prepare Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine honey, sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Allow the syrup to cool for 10 minutes.
  9. Finish and Serve: Drizzle the cooled honey syrup over the cinnamon roll-ups and sprinkle the remaining walnut mixture on top for added texture and flavor. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Serve with a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent experience.
  • Ensure phyllo dough stays covered with a damp towel while working to prevent drying out.
  • For a nuttier taste, lightly toast the walnuts before grinding.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days; reheat gently before serving.
